Alice Starmore's Book of Fair Isle Knitting has just been reprinted. It is the "must have" book for all Fair isle knitters both new and experienced.
The book starts with a history of Fair isle knitting and then there is a large section on pattern. This explains how patterns are combined, how to create patterns and how to adjust a pattern to fit your design. There are pages of charts.
Next is color.This section shows how colors can be inspired by nature, how choice of color can make the same pattern look very different and there are lots of color photos showing swatches.
The next section covers technique including the dreaded steeks! Everything is clearly explained with diagrams. There are also tips on caring for handknitted garmeents and how to make your own woolly board.
Next follows a wardrobe of patterns including sweaters, tops, jackets, vests and hats and gloves.
The last section is for those of you who would like to design your own garment . There are detailed instructions including neck and sleeve variations, how the choice of yarn influences the finished look and how much yarn you will need.
The book is softback and is 200 pages in length. It is heavy and so shipping is a bit expensive!
