This book is not a pattern book but rather a history of knitwear in the fashion industry. Sandy Black in association with the London College of Fashion has produced a book that presents a turning point in publications about knitwear and acknowledges the innovations in technology over the past 25 years that have changed the material, design, and production of knitwear as we previously knew it. Chapter one starts with an historical overview goes on to present changes in knitwear design as influenced by fashion design houses and technological developments in the areas of materials, machinery, and methods, and closes with a section on knitted accessories from bags to jewelry. Chapter two delves deeper into the technology of materials and what Sandy Black describes as the breaking down of the barriers between craft, art, and fashion by the use of experimental yarns, new fibres and fibre combinations, surface and structure treatments, and manipulation of surfaces and forms as a result of the knitting processes, and the radical impact new processes and materials have made on individual fashion designers. The third section of this chapter discusses the technical development of seamless construction, and the new dimensions to which it has been taken by Issey Miyake. Chapter three, called Blurring the Boundaries looks at knitting as a medium for expression in artworks and sculpture, performance, and for interior and furnishing design. The book closes with an Information chapter that includes knitting technology from hand- to advanced forms of machine knitting, yarns and fibres, designer biographies and finally a glossary of technical terms and resources. Sandy Black writes with clarity and comprehensive enthusiasm. She takes us into the world of high fashion, art, and theatre, and for not one moment do we lose touch of the softness and subtle feel of knitted textures This book is a must for everybody who has a passion for knits, fashion, and textiles, from maker to wearer! It is a softback with nearly 300 color photos with Kate Moss on the front cover - did you recognize her?!
